Preseason: Blackhawks vs Blues
3-1 Win Recap

"Poisonous"

by Gatekeeper

The Blackhawks welcomed the filthy St. Louis Blues into the United Center, Saturday night, for a meaningless preseason tilt. The Hawks trotted out some of the money players, including the most infamous man in the NHL right now, Patrick Kane.

The big news of the day, though, was right before game time. The Blackhawks announced an eight year extension, worth $6.85 million per season. The deal really makes this writer happy, as Seabrook is my favorite Blackhawks player. Good on the Hawks for nailing down their excellent top pair for a long long time. A welcomed distraction, under the circumstances.

Following the extension announcement there was a game to be played. Here are some of the highlights and lowlights:

The Good
  • Just over 7 minutes into the second period, the lottery line tied the game for the Blackhawks. Jonathan Toews tried to hit Hossa for a one timer, but it was in Hossa's skates. Hossa was still able to stop it, and set it up for a shot past Jake Allen.
  • Late in the 3rd period, in a 4-on-4 situation, Patrick Kane stole the puck at the Hawks blue line and went in on a long breakaway. He shielded the puck on his backhand and beat Jake Allen low to the glove side, to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Just a couple of minutes after the Kane goal, Duncan Keith used a powerplay situation to blow a long clapper past the glove side shoulder of Jake Allen, giving the Blackhawks a 3-1 lead.
  • The Blackhawks solidly out shot the Blues 34-21.
  • Corey Crawford pretty quietly had a real nice night, saving 20 of 21 shots.
The Bad
  • Artem Anisimov got a penalty shot late in the first period, and really didn't do much of anything to score. He really made it easy on Jake Allen.
  • Hjalmarsson took a third period run at Steve, the Pirate, Ott and completely missed. I, for one, would have been very happy to see that homicide occur. Ott is a steaming fucking turd.
  • Hey, look at that, Scott Gomez is still trying to play in the NHL.
  • The Blackhawks and Blues played a 3v3 OT, even though the Hawks on the game. A minute in, the Blackhawks got caught trying to make a change and former Blackhawk Troy Brouwer scored on a back door one timer. This 3vs3 OT stunt is going to be a real shitshow.
  • The Blackhawks lost in hits, as they always do, and at the faceoff dots. Just goes to prove that at the end of the day shots on net are more important that either.

The Ugly
  • After a Kyle Baun penalty late in the first period, the defensive pairing of Visnovsky and Schilling allowed Joel Edmundson to sneak in on the back door and take a pass from Chicago Wolves legend Ty Rattie.
  • I'm not sure what the hell Brandon Mashinter thought he was doing, late in the second period, but he completely submarined the Blues Colton Parayko. Stupid fucking play, by an obviously stupid player. He should have been tossed.

Preseason: Blackhawks at Montreal
5-1 Win Recap

"The Brave and The Bold"

by Gatekeeper

The Blackhawks travelled to Montreal, Friday night, to take on the Canadiens in their 3rd preseason game. The lineup was once again full of unfamiliar names, and lacked big names like Duncan Keith, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. Nonetheless, the kids were out to make an impression on the coaching staff, which was fun for us prospect geeks.

Earlier in the day, the team announced that 10 players had been sent to Rockford and two other players (Tropp/Morin) were put on waivers to be sent there, as well. As the roster was taking shape, we could probably expect this to be the last game for a few of these kids.

All roster moves and press conferences aside, there was actually a game that actually happened.

The Good
  • After Daniel Paille was stopped on a breakaway, while drawing what should have been a penalty shot, David Rundblad did the one thing he is actually pretty good at. Shoot the puck. It only took the Hawks a few seconds into the powerplay to open the scoring, as Ryan Garbutt redirected a long David Rundblad point shot past league MVP Carey Price.
  • Just a little over a minute after the Garbutt goal, the line of Andrew Desjardins, Garrett Ross and Kyle Super Baun-Baun played a little tic-tac-toe. Desjardins took an intercepted pass right up the gullet and took it the other way. After hitting the Habs blue line, he dropped the puck to the trailer, Kyle Baun. The Habs defense bit on the Desjardins "pick", as he drove the net. Baun was left way too much room to hit the stick of a wide open Ross, aka Shaw 2.0, on the back door for the tap in.
  • The Baun, Desjardins, Ross line picked up his second plus of the night in their next shift. Desjardins got the puck deep, Ross kept the puck moving behind the net, and Baun eventually picked up a blocked Trevor Daley shot in the slot and pumped it past Price.
  • Shortly after the Habs were able break the shutout, the Blackhawks line of the night (Desjardins,Ross,Baun) scored their 3rd of the night. Desjardins actually tried to send a pass across the slot and it was tipped by Kyle Super Baun-Baun, beating Carey Price, who was cheating the pass and leaning the wrong way.
  • Scott Darling was solid once again. He saved 30 of 31.
  • Call me crazy, but Daniel Paille looks useful. He may not have a spot on this team, but he has shown he can contribute as a 4th liner.
The Bad
  • Just 25 seconds seconds into the second period, Zack Kassian broke in on the Hawks defense and was able to squirt a shot past Scott Darling to finally put the Habs on the scoreboard. The bad part for them is that they were still down 3-1.

The Ugly
  • About five minutes into the third period, Ryan Garbutt got himself into a precarious position as he was bearing down on the Habs Ryan Johnston. Johnston turned his back just before Garbutt got to him and ended up with a face full of end boards. I can't fault Garbutt, because he was committed to the hit already.
  • Chris Desousa caught the Habs Gabriel Dumont lazily admiring his chip of the puck and labeled him with what looked like a good hit. As a result he was pulled into a slap and tickle. The drama was after, as he earned himself a 5/5/10 and was booted. I didn't really see it as that bad of a hit. If you ask me, and you didn't but it's my website, he left his feet AFTER contact. You can decide for yourself HERE
  • Hawks centers were clowned at the dots, winning only 35%.

Preseason: Blackhawks at Detroit
4-1 Loss Recap

"Gets Me Through"

by Gatekeeper

Despite the absolute shitshow and embarrassment going on in Buffalo New York, The Blackhawks wrapped up their preseason opening "home and home" series with the Red Wings in Detoilet, last night. When 21 year old, former 6th round draft pick Vince Hinostroza is your starting first line center, it's pretty clear that you've iced a young thin squad, and the final results backed that up. No Toews, No Kane, No Hossa, No Keith, No Seabrook, No Hjalmarsson. You get the point. It was half the Wings against the Rockford Icehogs.

The first period started out heavily in the Blackhawks favor, but that changed about 7 minutes in. The shots were 13-5 overall in the first twenty minutes but the Blackhawks went into the intermission down 1-0.

Even though a majority of the second period was boring, and the Blackhawks led in shots, again, they went into the second intermission down 2-1. Everything after the first period was generally boring, so I will spare you the rest...

The Good
  • The 4th line of Mashinter, Hatrman, and Kero started a dominant, almost 2 minute, flurry in the Wings zone early in the first. Hartman almost scored a few times, and the Blackhawks were able to make a full line change. Despite that pretty good first period, they were each -2 on the night.
  • I didn't hate Daniel Paille out on the ice, but there is nowhere for him on this team.
  • Late in the second period, Andrew Shaw used some rare powerplay time to snap a long wrist shot past the Detoilet goalie Jared Coreau, tying up the game. This was really the lone bright spot.
  • Mike Liambas drew 3 penalties. That is a plus, right?
  • Trevor van Riemsdyk led the Blackhawks in time on ice.
The Bad
  • The Blackhawks went down 1-0 when the trio of Ryan Hartman, Ville Pokka and Jan Hejda all backed far too deep into the zone and let Tomas Tatar pick their goalie apart.
  • Five minutes into the third period, Brad Richards and Tomas Tatar victimized the back end of Jan Hejda, Ville Pokka and Michael Leighton to take a 3-1 lead. Hejda did a fly by past the net, leaving Tatar in the crease all alone to jam a Leighton rebound into the net. Pokka's play to push Richards outside wasn't really all that bad, but the support behind him didn't help him out whatsoever.
  • Tomas Tatar ended up with a hat trick, scoring a late empty net goal.
  • Can we put this Jan Hejda experiment to bed? He's awful.
  • The Jurco/Richards/Tatar line were all +3. Enjoy it while you can, Detoilet.
  • I was anxious to see Tikhonov, Kero, Pokka and Gustafsson play, and I was greatly disappointed. Tikhonov had a decent tip off the post, but none of them really had strong games, despite what the postgame crew will tell you. Each did a thing or two well, but with a chance to really show Hawks fans something, they all fell short.

The Ugly
  • Brandon Mashinter sucks. Bad. Now I know why he was sent to Rockford early last season. Purely as a hockey player, he might be a shade above John Scott. That's not saying much.
  • Shortly after the Shaw goal, a brutal Blackhawks line change left Justin Abdelkader all by himself at the Blackhawks blue line. Kronwall hit Abdelkader on the tape and he was in all alone on just inserted Micheal Leighton. 2-1 Wings and it was pretty much over from then on out
  • Ryan Hartman went from having a great start to taking 2 penalties, later. He's right on track for taking over that Shaw spot, someday.

Preseason: Red Wings at Blackhawks - 5-4 OT win

Knife in Yer Gut

by Gatekeeper

The Blackhawks had a game. They won said game 5-4, in overtime.

We were a little tied up with recording the shoutcast, which began during the second intermission, so right to the highlights and low lights (and download the shoutcast, ya lazy bastards):

The Good
  • The Blackhawks opened up scoring pretty early. Kyle Super Baun-Baun whacked a puck out of the air, dangerously close to a high stick, just over seven minutes into the first. Nice play, after all was said and done, though.
  • Just about a minute after the Baun goal, Jonathan Toews took a pass off Trevor Daley's skate and easily blew a wrist shot past Opie Howard, from about 20 feet out. Not the most sharp play by Howard, but it was off the stick of Jonny Clutch. It's OK if he pooped his diaper a little.
  • #LemontNativeScottDarling looked sharp. He had to make 15 saves in the first period, including 2 powerplays. One of the powerplays was a 5-on-3 and we all know Dr. Lineblender's opinion of those. He finished saving 22 of 22.
  • In the second period, Teuvo Teravainen put the Blackhawks up 3-0, on the powerplay, just over 5 minutes into the second period. I could get used to this Finnish Cold powerplay.
  • I liked what I saw from Dano with Toews and Hossa. This was one game, though. He was shaken up in the second period, but returned later.
  • Ryan Garbutt had a nice third period goal, where is kind of got in behind the Detroit forwards, and was able to snap a wrist shot past future Grand Rapids Griffin, Tom McCollum.
  • It's about time the Blackhawks figured out how to manage to get all the preseaon games on TV.
The Bad
  • Someone needs to explain to me what Michal Rozsival has over Jan Hejda, and Lubomir Visnovsky. Both seem like competent players, more specifically Visnovsky. Rozsival's questionable ankle doesn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzies. If Visnovsky can stay healthy, and that is a big "if", he could be extremely useful, especially on the powerplay.
  • The 3-on-3 overtime is going to end MOST games. While I don't really like it, 3vs3 is better than the shootout, in my opinion. It helps that the Blackhawks speed, and top end skill will clown most opponents. Just wait until we see some team that is slower and defensive. Those kinds team are going to be absolutely annihilated. Once the Blackhawks were able to gain the 3-on-1 advantage, the game was over. It's almost unfair, but it will be fun from this side of things.

The Ugly
  • Mark Visentin had a pretty awful night, but the team in front of him wasn't much better. He gave up all 4 Detoilet goals and saved only 16 of 20 shots. His play strongly resembled the play of Steve Passmore.
  • David Rundblad. Not the best way to open up your brand new 2 year contract. I don't get it. I just do not get it. But, HEY; #3CUPZ
  • Watchout! The Blackhawks led in #HITZ, 31-30.

Hell Hath No Fury
Like a Woman Scorned for Sega
NHL16 for the Blackhawks Fan

With the Blackhawks training camp about to kick off, I thought it would be be to put something together that is a little more lighthearted. This place could use some fruity lavender spray, especially with the ever looming dark cloud of law enforcement hovering over a certain asshole franchise player.

I digress, though...

This week, EA Sports released the much anticipated first "full" next gen NHL game, in NHL16, or as I like to call it, "New Hotness". I say "full" game because NHL15, or as I like to call IT "Old and Busted", was technically a full game but was extremely scaled back and the game features were a shell of what previous games were.

EA has admitted that they rushed to get "Old and Busted" out on the next gen platforms, and that is the reason several long time NHL game feature were left out. There were online issues, there were HUT issues but, most importantly for me, there were huge GM mode holes. My biggest gripe was that your prospects didn't generate stats, or even play games. How can players progress if they don't do anything? The answer is that they can't. Furthermore, how are you supposed to gauge players performance to promote them, trade them, or just make an assessment? Off an imaginary arbitrary rating number that EA sports created? I'm sorry, but I treat my GM gameplay more serious than that. To put it bluntly, "Old and Busted" was a wasted opportunity. It just barely held us fans over for those 12 months between '14 and '16, and accomplished nothing more than annoying die hard NHL gamers.

Enough about "Old and Busted". "New Hotness" is here, and it SEEMS like many of the promises that have been mentioned thus far were delivered. I, myself, am a few days into my "New Hotness" experience, and it has been frustrating. I say frustrating because this game is an adjustment. Gameplay is different. The biggest change, in my opinion, is the hitting mechanics. If you are anything like me you were able to dial in the NHL15 hitting, and utterly abuse the feature. It was incredibly easy to completely ragdoll just about anyone and everyone. Some games looked like Mob hit scenes from Goodfellas. There were bodies and equipment strewn about everywhere. The only thing missing was Gretzky's head bleeding. Not so easy in NHL16. Several times, I have tried to steamroll players that were standing still, and my player just misses, like some invisible force field. This isn't to say you cannot hit people, it is just more difficult to line them up.

My second gripe is this thing they have thrown in the GM and Be A Pro modes, and EA calls it "Morale". Don't get me wrong, I understand the concept and what they are trying to do. Teams or players can get temporary ebbs and flows based on their "Morale". The problem with this is that the AI is who decides when these peaks and valleys strike. The AI can make an opponent better, just for the sheer entertainment. For example, I held a team meeting and a dozen players had their "Morale" go up. This is all good and well. I made a conscious move that resulted in a good or bad reaction. Makes total sense, doesn't it? After getting shutout for two straight preseason games, by terrible goalies, I went into St. Louis and dominated them for 40 straight minutes, taking a 3-1 lead into the third period. You read that right, 40 minutes. Two periods. In the third period, magically for no reason other than the fact that I was winning, my team could not cover opposing players, connect on a simple 5 foot pass, or make a breakout pass without putting it directly on the stick of an opponent. The Blues came back and beat me 5-4. I did nothing different than I had in the previous 2 periods, I never do. I am painfully stuck in habits and routines. The AI decided to aid the Blues and penalize my team. This comes off as a bullshit way to allow the AI to give itself an advantage wherever and whenever it seems fit. I'm already not buying this load of crap they are feeding us.

My last gripe will always be a gripe with these games. The rosters. They are always wonky, and always will be. There is no good way around it. People like me know the Blackhawks roster inside and out, but if you asked me to throw together an accurate roster for the Ottawa Senators, I might put together something that has inaccuracies. Think of the EA as a team of LA Kings fans putting together a Carolina Hurricanes roster. They are not as intimate with your team or my team as we might be. They will make some mistakes. To get the rosters truly accurate to the point that it is acceptable to the average super fan of a team, they would need to either consult a member of each team or consult someone that covers the team. Even though, I'd be glad to volunteer my time to assist, they certainly don't want my help. Most people don't, with good reason. This is just the final frontier for EA.

All this said, I like the game, even as much as it has frustrates me. I can run a GM mode and my prospects generate stats. Prospects progress. I'm a happy guy. Thank you EA, for delivering a playable game actually worth owning. As far as the Blackhawks go, if you're OCD like I am, you want the their roster to be as close to real life as possible, before you blow it up and trade for half the Western Conference Allstars and a real #Goaler. Comparing rosters, prospects and unsigned players can be a huge pain in the ass, so I thought I would throw together a little checklist to help Blackhawks fans consolidate. This is what I spent about 4 hours doing on Tuesday afternoon and evening. I know...

Be sure to do all this before you start your GM mode. These are all made, based on the latest roster update, dated 9/9, and saved as a custom roster.

Create players - You will need to create a few player that don't exist. Artemi Panarin (83), Erik Gustafsson (81), Tanner Kero (74), Kyle Baun (72), and Vince Hinostroza (73) are all players that will be important in Blackhawks land, so you should probably add them. These are players that may end up in Blackhawks uniforms in the nxt 24 months, for one reason or another. If not, you have more trade chips. You will have to guess on the granular stats, like i did, but you can find their general vitals online. I make a hypothesis on their ratings, which should not be a stretch at all. If you really want to get more granular, you could add players like Ivan Nalimov, Matt Tomkins, or Robin Press. If you don't think you'll have a need for them, don't bother. There are plenty of Free Agents that can fill open holes.

Acquisitions - You can find defensemen Robin Norell and Carl Dahlstrom in the SWE league. Mark Visentin is a goalie in the Free Agent pool that will get playing time in Rockford. You are more than welcome to add players on PTOs, like Daniel Paille, Tomas Kopecky, Michael Rozsival, Kyle Cumiskey, Lubomir Visnovsky, or Jan Hejda but most aren't worth the effort and will count as $575K against the cap if they are left on the NHL roster. You will need to trade Versteeg and Nordstrom to Carolina for Dennis Robertson (on Charlotte Checkers). The second player, Jake Massie, isn't in the game.

Edit Players - I change the gear on Crawford and Darling to their new black scheme. Tikhonov is rated really low, so I would suggest bumping up his rating just a bit. I have a feeling he is going to be slightly better than the 73 EA gave him. That is average for an AHL player. Other than those few tweaks, I left the ratings alone.

Here are what Crawford and Darling now look like, after my tweaking:

Drop players - Tropp and Morin can certainly be demoted, even though Morin is actually a decent player, in the game. For some insane reason, the EA crew just loves themselves some Shawn Lalonde. I cannot understand why. Shawn Lalonde has not been a part of the Blackhawks organization for two complete seasons, yet when you start your GM mode, there is Shawn Lalonde playing 3rd line defense for the Rockford Icehogs. The Hogs roster had something like 30 players on it already, but he is still there. Since he's a space filler, there isn't much you can do but scratch him, but WHY HIM?

The Unknowns - Three of this year's draft picks, Garrett Knott, Roy Radke, and Joni Tuulola are actually property of the Blackhawks in NHL16, even though you can't initially see them. Once you begin GM mode, Knott and Radke appear under "Contracts/Unsigned Players". Tuulola and Gustav Forsling will also appear on Rockford once you begin.

The Toxic Waltz
Blackhawks Unload Versteeg and Nordstrom
Sign Marcus Kruger, and more

by Gatekeeper

The Blackhawks announced that they have made a deal, this afternoon, with the Carolina Hurricanes. They acquired two AHL defensemen, Dennis Robertson and Jake Massie, for Kris Versteeg and recently re-signed RFA Joakim Nordstrom. Looked at as a salary dump, this deal didn't exactly wow anyone on this side. While a salary dump is perfectly acceptable, the Blackhawks only cleared up roughly $2.7 million. This will get the team under that salary cap ceiling, but only gave them about $2.5 Million in additional room. This, of course, is all contingent on Jeremy Morin and Corey Tropp playing in Rockford.

The scouting report on the two new players are as follows, via Hockey's Future:

Dennis Robertson - Ht/Wt: 6' 0"/195 lbs - The go-to defenseman at Brown during his college career Robertson logged heavy minutes in all situations. He has a big, hard shot, which makes him a threat offensively, particularly on the power play and is sound in his own end of the ice. He’s beginning to add more snarl to his game which is making him a more valuable defenseman.

Jake Massey - Ht/Wt: 6' 1"/172 lbs - Drafted this summer, Massie was ranked as the 8oth best North American skater in the final NHL Central Scouting rankings. He is the top ranked defenseman in prep hockey.

Very shortly after the Versteeg trade, the Blackhawks announced that they had re-signed Marcus Kruger to a one year, $1.5 million contract. This, of course, was the discount of the year. Yes, Kruger was an RFA. Yes, Kruger was restricted in his options, but I fail to believe that there wasn't a single team in the NHL willing to offer a $2.5 million deal to try him at 3rd line C. Just because he didn't sign an offer sheet doesn't mean the offer wasn't there. Common sense tells you that an affordable, responsible, young shutdown center was called a time or two. Kruger did the Blackhawks a solid, and I hope that he is rewarded for his loyalty down the road.

Also announced were the signings of defenseman Jan Hejda and Daniel Paille to Professional Tryout Contracts. This means both will battle for depth spots in camp.

Hejda would be a slightly better version of Michal Rozsival, Nick Boynton, or Sean O'Donnell. You get the hint. A third pairing veteran defenseman that won't kill you in his own end.

The same could be said for Daniel Paille. He is a depth forward that will battle for a Left Wing spot, most likely, on the fourth line. The problem is that the fourth line is pretty crowded already. The Blackhawks have Marcus Kruger, Ryan Garbutt, Andrew Desjardins, Andrew Shaw, or Viktor Tikhonov (depending on which ends up playing 3rd line C, or maybe second, in Shaw's case) as well as possibly Jeremy Morin, or Corey Tropp already fighting for playing time on the fourth line. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt to have more competition. There is zero risk to this move.

The Hawks have about $900K to sign a player, but they don't want to hover that close to the cap. This would mean that someone needs to go. We shall see how the camp drama shakes out.

Here is an updated look at the Blackhawks cap situation:

Discussed is Fatrick's intarwebz issues with ATT U-Verse which cause a delayed start, the imminent release of NHL16, the league criminals, some idiotic Jonathan Toews character assassination attempts, possible games between the KHL champs and NHL Champs in the future, a few notable league wide signings, some media "lost in translation", some low level Blackhawks organizational signings, lack of salary cap movement or Marcus Kruger developments, and we also finish another episode talking some more about the embarrassment that is "The Hockey Press".
